One of the largest olive oil producers in Europe, our country forms its agricultural sector with its corresponding needs.
Hundreds of areas of fruit trees and mills are the main feature of the landscape in many areas of Greece.
OMWW can be collected from tanks in mobile tanks, spread directly to the field or stored in catchments. The basin is the simplest and most economical storage system, but there are risks of soil and subsoil pollution.
The environmental pollution caused by the production and processing of the fruit has led to an environmental regulation. The legislative framework to be followed by producers and subsequently by experts in the management of sewage.
Specifically, the Water Pollution Control Ordinance was adopted in 2005. 270/2005, on the General Terms and Conditions for Disposal of Olive Mills. Under this Decree, improved and more detailed waste disposal terms were incorporated into the Waste Disposal Permits.
At the same time, the CPC Decree no. 270/2005 lays down conditions for the management of waste water which were designated as
(a) liquid waste from olive rinsing; and
(b) the liquid waste from the centrifugal separators of the liquid phase of the production process, where the vegetable oil of the olive is separated from the olive oil, the so-called ‘jizur’.
In the case of solid waste, reference was made to the oil core from the decanter separating liquids from the solid parts of the olive and to the sludge settling in the liquid waste evaporation tanks, and solid waste from the oil waste.
